DNA tests can reveal predispositions to diseases, athletic talent, and ancestral origin. The influence of genes on talent is complex and is also shaped by upbringing and environment. Some genetic disorders lead to disease with certainty, while others only increase the probability. DNA analysis can help in disease prevention by enabling lifestyle adjustments. DNA tests are also used in legal cases and in determining ancestry. Students from Slovak secondary schools visited the Environmental and Food Microbiology Group of the Institute of Molecular Biology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. The excursion focused on how scientific research is conducted and on the challenges associated with the work of a scientist, with particular emphasis on the project under the MVTS programme – “The use of environmental microbiota and their genetic resources for the development of innovative and sustainable solutions for the biosorption of rare earth elements.”
