Popularization of science
New discovery brings hope for cancer patientsJán Jamroškovič, Maria Vittoria Cottini | časopis Akademia SAV | 11.12.2025J. Jamroškovič and M.V.Cottini, together with an international scientific team, participated in the discovery of a new mechanism that can use light to specifically destroy cancer cells. The DBI-POE molecule does not contain heavy metals and acts only in the illuminated area, which opens the way to a gentler and more effective treatment of tumors... You can read how photodynamic therapy works and what makes the new method unique compared to the classic one in the interview...

The west ignores nature's bacteria killer! Will antibiotics come to an end?Lucia Bocánová | youtube THROSKA | 14.09.2025Antibiotics are becoming ineffective and bacteria are turning into super-resistant killers. What if the solution comes not from the laboratory, but from nature – from viruses that destroy bacteria better than any medicine? Lucia Bocánová, who researches bacteriophages and their potential in medicine, accepted an invitation to appear on TROSHCAST. What are bacteriophages? What are enzybiotics and how can they break down bacterial biofilm?
A special molecule that delivers more targeted cancer treatmentJán Jamroškovič, Maria Vittoria Cottini | Aktuality SAV | 12.09.2025Photodynamic therapy is a modern method of cancer treatment in which a special photosensitizer molecule is administered to the patient and the tumor is then illuminated with a specific light. An international team of scientists, including two experts from the Slovak Academy of Sciences, has discovered a new mechanism for targeting cancer cells. The advantage of this therapy is that the destruction of these cells occurs only in the illuminated area, so systemic side effects are minimal.
Interactive conference of young scientists awards prestigious Preveda 2025 prizesBohuš Kubala | Aktuality SAV | 05.09.2025Congratulations to our PhD student
Bohuš Kubala from the Institute of Molecular Biology SAS for winning the prestigious Preveda Award 2025!
Bohuš succeeded with his work on “Production of a novel non-specific peroxygenase from Suillus sp. fungus in Escherichia coli” in the Biotechnology section. Great achievement showcasing the quality of research at our institute!

SAS molecular biologists protect national archivesLucia Kraková , Domenico Pangallo | Aktuality SAV | 13.02.2025A group from the Institute of Molecular Biology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, led by Dr. Domenico Pangallo, PhD, is one of the investigators of the innovative, international SAGA project, which is based on the common need to protect national archives from natural and man-made disasters, as well as climate change. This project aims to develop different strategies to prevent damage to archives while studying existing biological threats that threaten not only archives but also the staff who work with them and their users/visitors. The project is based on a multidisciplinary collaboration between several partners across Europe (Spain, Portugal, Hungary, Malta, Italy, Ireland, Poland and Slovakia)...
"The grant for a scientist threatened by the war in Ukraine 09I03-03-V01-00113"Tetiana Moskalets | ÚMB SAV v. v. i., Bratislava | 01.01.2025T. Moskalets presented the results of studies on the molecular mechanisms of the inhibitory effect of the flavanone glycoside hesperidin on epithelial-mesenchymal transition and pulmonary fibrosis. It was shown that in vitro, the process of fibrosis, which is considered a major long-term complication after COVID-19, has an incompletely understood etiology and limited treatment options, is able to be suspended by hesperidin, suppressing the expression of mesenchymal and fibrosis markers (collagen, fibronectin, a-SMA, ADAM 17, PAI-1 and others)...
